>'journeys' by claire fahys

Claire Fahys’s work orchestrates a manifold exploration of the spatial ordering of the city. In an attempt to interact with the infinite complexities of urban landscapes, her paintings often resemble mazes blending together a series of intricate, labyrinthine compositions.

Claire’s paintings are populated by bizarre drawings superimposed on structures assembled from fragments of architectural patterns. The use of perspective and spatial manipulation create an impression of vertiginous, imploding spaces.

All the elements are all ordered on the canvas in a chaotic yet at the same time remarkably structured way.

Claire’s technique is considerably varied: Photo transfer, collage, gouache, use of inks, pencil…The painting thus deliberately aims to combine a multitude of textures, reminiscent, in that, to the common architectural practice of mixing up different kinds of materials.: blocks of buildings, concrete bridges, aesthetically neutral or even distasteful constructions yet fascinating in their total disregard for imprinting any kind of ‘human trace’.

Claire Fahys was born in Paris in 1984. She moved to London in 2004 to study fine art at the Central Saint Martin School. Claire Fahys lives and works in Berlin since 2011. Her work has been permanently represented by contemporary art galleries since the age of 19.
